Panel Behaviour: Are We Still Into Wall Panelling in 2025?

Panel Behaviour: Are We Still Into Wall Panelling in 2025?

By STYLEDas

An interior trend deep-dive where every wall has a story.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: if walls could talk, they’d be screaming in MDF right now. From TikTok tutorials to high-end show homes, panelling has gone from niche craft to mainstream staple, and in 2025, it’s not slowing down… but it is evolving.

So, are we still obsessed? And more importantly, should you be? PS the answer is YES!

The Rise (and Rise) of the Panel

Google searches for “wall panelling ideas” increased by 74% year-on-year in the UK, and TikTok’s #panelling has clocked over 350 million views. What started as a Sunday project for DIY-lovers has now trickled into luxury developments, boutique hotels, and every other scroll on your Pinterest feed. Why? Because panelling offers what we all want: texture, warmth, and that ‘I paid a designer’ feel, even if you did it with a mitre saw and three cups of coffee.

But the real driver? The shift in how we live. Open-plan fatigue, rising home office culture, and the relentless hunt for “a backdrop that slaps on Zoom” have all fuelled the need for more intentional wall design.

Trends Within the Trend

2024 was all about the traditional shaker-style grid. Classic, safe, and seen in every Instagram renovation reel from here to Hertfordshire. But in 2025? We're seeing the story change a little.

  • Vertical Slat Panelling is having a moment, Scandi meets Soho House. Think narrow strips in rich walnut or ash, often with acoustic benefits too (hello, crying babies and podcast hosts).
  • Oversized Modern Panels, minimal, luxe, and great for smaller spaces. Fewer lines, bigger impact.
  • Colour-Drenched Panelling, forget contrasting colours. We’re seeing walls, skirting, and even ceilings in one bold hue for a moody, cocooned effect. Yes, your wall can wear head-to-toe navy. We approve.
  • Texture-Layered Panels, fluted, ribbed, even micro cement panelling is creeping in for a more elevated, architectural edge.

But Is It Overdone?

Let's be real, when every downstairs loo is giving "Regency-core meets MDF", there's a risk of saturation. Some designers argue we've passed peak panelling. But we don't believe in blanket statements over here at STYLEDas. Trends evolve, they don't vanish.

The real question is: Are you doing it with intention? Are you enhancing the architecture and personality of your space... or just copying Karen from Pinterest?

STYLEDas Says:

  • DO panel with purpose. Consider proportions, ceiling height, and natural light.
  • DON’T default to shaker by habit, explore vertical, fluted, or even asymmetrical designs.
  • DO play with colour and contrast (we’re loving dirty olive, ink black, and soft clay).
  • DON’T skimp on the prep; filler, sanding, and finish make the look.
  • DO ask yourself if it enhances the vibe or just fills the wall.

So, What’s the Verdict?

Panelling is still in, but basic isn’t. In 2025, we’re levelling up! Moodier colours, cleaner lines, richer materials. It’s no longer just about adding detail  it’s about designing the drama, softness, or structure depending on your space.

And if you do it right? Your walls won’t just talk, they’ll slay!

I absolutely love panelling. The way Sheldon did the frame within a frame in my favourite, I think it looks chic and shows a clear sense of unique styling. The overly large frames are another favourite of mine 💗💗💗💗
